Peel back the proverbial nori of this intoxicating country, and you’ll find that beyond its courteous yet austere people, slick city vibe and immaculate appearance, there’s also a bizarre underworld of strange but endearing fetishes, age-old restaurants that serve only one kind of dish and a profusion of kawaii cat cafes.

In the shiny capital of Tokyo, spend time people-watching in the trendy Harajuku neighbourhood, where cosplayers parade up and down the street like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Take in the sprawling green expanse of Yoyogi Park, and settle down by the water with a picnic basket of onigiri and steaming edamame. Head into the heart of Tokyo for your fix of authentic sushi, made with ingredients so fresh you'll be tempted to check if they’re still moving. Have a break at the Kit Kat Chocolatory and Cafe, where you can try gastronomical versions of that classic chocolate treat, before heading to Asakusa, an older part of Tokyo, to cuddle with a kitty in a cafe. Finish off the night with a visit to the famous ‘50s-esque Golden Gai to scarf down delicious drinks while you rub shoulders with hilariously tipsy locals.

A few of the day trip from Tokyo include the magnificent Mt Fuji, Hakone and Nikko National Park.

Journey to Japan’s spiritual heart in Kyoto, where the atmosphere still seems to cling to the days of old. Wander through blissful gardens, peek into a traditional tea house and keep an eye out for dazzling geishas shuffling into an alley for a rendezvous. The enchanting Philosopher’s Path is great for a mid-morning stroll, or you could choose to cycle down its 2-km stone path; if the time is right you'll be able to take in the magnificent cherry blossoms in full bloom.

If you have time on your hands it’s definitely worth budgeting a couple of days to explore the Japanese Alps, especially Kamikochi National Park.
