To explore a country as diverse as Australia to its fullest would be an exercise in futility - there’s just so much to see.
But you’ve got to start somewhere, and there’s no better place than buzzing, atmospheric Sydney. Climb to dizzying heights atop the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a bird’s eye view of the city, before heading back down for a tour of the iconic Opera House. Cricket lovers must make a customary pilgrimage to the famous SCG, while kids can marvel at some typically Aussie critters at the Taronga Zoo. There’s lots to do around Sydney, too - drive into the misty Blue Mountains with their heady eucalyptus scent, or cruise down the Grand Pacific Drive to Wollongong.
In Melbourne, Sydney’s eclectic, artsy cousin, delve into the alleyways off its orderly grid and you’ll discover the true flavour of the city. Take a tour to discover world-class restaurants, kitschy stores and coffee shops that hold true to the city’s obsession with the bean, or stroll down the Esplanade in nearby, old-timey St. Kilda. A couple of hours from Melbourne, Phillip Island awaits, its daily sundown Penguin Parade a real draw. Mind those wine stains in Yarra Valley as you throw back a couple of their finest Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.
A trip to Australia is almost pointless without a visit to the Great Barrier Reef. Put on a wetsuit and dive into the deep to explore a truly spectacular water world. The Sunshine Coast, aglow with golden beaches and sun-kissed denizens is just as gorgeous, and makes for a great drive.
In the heart of the Land Down Under, Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) stands like a glowing gem. One of Australia's most recognisable natural landmarks, this sacred rock to the Aboriginals makes for an awe-inspiring sight.
In the Northern Territory, Darwin attracts those who are looking to avoid the crowds. The country’s only tropical capital city, it looks out over the Timor Sea, happy in its semi-isolation.
Way over in the West, Perth offers a different side of Australia. Adventure sports, vineyards and beaches are all a stone’s throw away, and the city’s easy vibe will have you smiling benignly like the happy little quokkas on Rottnest Island.
